Stages that are usually legally owned by one of Germany’s federal states and are financed at least 50 percent from the state’s budget are referred to as state theatres. Most state theatres go back to former court and residence theatres and therefore have an important theatre tradition and venues with above-average seating capacity and stage size. In contrast to the regional theatres, which are sometimes also solely sustained by a federal state, the state theatres are characterised above all by their permanent local ties.
