Training Facilities for Church Music

Where can I complete training in church music?

Church music training in Germany is divided into two major areas: on the one hand, training for full-time church music service and, on the other hand, training for the various part-time activities. Training to become a full-time church musician usually takes place at tertiary-level schools of music and church music; With its wealth of subjects, it is one of the most complex and demanding music degree programmes. In addition to the artistic requirements - especially in organ playing and choir direction - studying church music also requires academic and, increasingly, pedagogical talent.
The German Music Information Centre (miz) lists tertiary-level schools of church music, tertiary-level schools of music and universities that offer training for full-time (A and B exams or Master's and Bachelor's degrees), and sometimes as well for part-time church music service. In addition, vocational training colleges for music and other training centres for part-time church musicians (at least C exams) are listed.
