Call for Musical Works

The 2003 ISCM World Music Days will be held in Slovenia from September 26 to October 3, 2003.

Theme

Throughout the thousand year long development of art music new centuries usually brought about far-reaching changes. We have left the 20th century and 2nd millennium, and have already entered the 21st century and 3rd millennium. The age we are living in confronts us with media that influence the individual as well as whole nations, both the creative artist and the public. The alienation of artistic achievements, that due to hasty search of new boundaries together with categorical denial of tradition find no contact with the broader public, represents a rather rigid frontier. The theme of the 2003 World Music Days “New Music for the Third Millennium” anticipates changes to come: music should increase the number of its listeners, while preserving the purity of its expressive contents. It wants to trespass on the other side and to enter a new era in which, without disavowing the creativity of the olden times, it can seek and find new artistic impulses. On the threshold of the 3rd millennium let us look forward to greater sophistication, closeness and creativeness of the media, our wish being that the theme chosen will stimulate the composers’ creativity. That is its sole purpose.

Already before the official “Call for Musical Works” the Slovene Section announced the following preliminary international calls:

- Installation “Light and Music” (opening multimedia event in the city centre of Ljubljana)

- Electro-acoustic musical installation in the Postojna Cave (percussion and electronics in the Carst underworld)

- Musical event on Tartini Square (installation on the central square of a coastal town)

- World premiere of three ballet compositions (orchestra with possible use of electro-acoustics, free-chosen themes, three prizewinning works)

- Symphonic composition of a young composer (for young composers up to 35 years of age, within national selections or individually, only one prize to be awarded)

The intention of these calls was to ensure extra possibilities and give the composers additional time for the completion of their works.

As with the general call, the deadline for entries is May 31, 2002.
