What research institutions are there in the field of music?

What is music? What conditions influence its production, performance and perception? How does music affect emotions? What do we know about baroque music? Research institutions in the field of music work on very different issues, are often interdisciplinary, and have a long tradition in Germany.
The German Music Information Centre (miz) lists research institutions that are members of the working group of independent music research institutes of Germany’s Musicological Society (Gesellschaft für Musikforschung). Other institutions are included if they conduct their research over a longer period of time. Among others, musicological research projects of the Academies of Sciences and Humanities are listed, including numerous complete editions of German composers.
