Music Archives
Where are there archives with important music collections?
Throughout Germany, music archives with different specialisations collect sources and materials on music history up to the present day. The collection areas range from music from the Middle Ages to the present day and popular music. In Leipzig, the German Music Archive in the German National Library (DNB) has established itself as the central collection, where, among other things, sheet music and sound recordings from all German music publishers and labels are collected and stored.
The German Music Information Centre (miz) lists nationally significant archives and documentation centres, as well as music archives belonging to the working group of independent music research institutes of Germany’s Musicological Society (Gesellschaft für Musikforschung). Special collections, holdings and archived posthumous estates are listed in the entries, provided the institutions concerned have notified us.
